During the first months of World War Two a young mother had decided
to leave London and return home to Ireland where she felt much safer.
She took with her a six-year-old daughter and 2-year-old baby son
but the youngster refused to settle in his bunk for the night. In
desperation she threatened to 'put him out of the porthole' if he
didn't stop crying and that seemed to work as the baby quietened
down.
With that she went into the dining room for an evening meal but
when she returned the porthole was open, the baby was missing and
the little girl slept peacefully in her bunk after, apparently carrying
out her mother's threat.
